You are not short of water at the top of Charlotte Harbor. What you cannot do from a driveway is reach a beach before anybody else has walked it — and because a shelling departure is set by low tide rather than by you, and San Marco Marina in Goodland is 1 hr 40 to 2 hr 15 south of Port Charlotte, this is a day you build in reverse.

Why this particular day gets planned in reverse

Port Charlotte sits at the head of a very large estuary, with the Peace River on one side of it and the twin US-41 bridges over to Punta Gorda, so nobody here needs telling the water is good. What you cannot do from a driveway is reach a beach before everybody else has. That is the whole argument. Road access is what wears a tide line out: a beach you can park at gets walked at first light by everyone else who can park there. The keys our boats land on have no bridge, no lot and no road, so the tide refills them overnight and nobody arrives ahead of you.

Here is the part that costs you a morning if we get it wrong. Almost everything you would point a car south for — the shelling runs, the wild-island landings, the Ten Thousand Islands — boards at San Marco Marina, 604 E Palm Ave in Goodland, out on the southeast tip of Marco Island. From Port Charlotte, Goodland is 1 hr 40 to 2 hr 15: US-41 south over the Gilchrist Bridge, then I-75 south. Our other dock, Naples Bay Resort & Marina at 1500 5th Avenue South, is genuinely nearer at 1 hr 05 to 1 hr 35 and runs the bay-side cruises. The two are not interchangeable.

So you cannot build this day forwards. A shelling trip only works around low water, which means the hour printed on your confirmation is the hour the Gulf handed us, not the one that suited your household — reserve the boat first, then work every other number backwards from it. Two things bend that arithmetic. Season, roughly November into April, pushes both of those ranges toward their top end; and I-75 Exit 101 at Collier Boulevard, the exit you want for Goodland, is under interchange reconstruction into late 2026, so allow for it. Shelling is $125 per adult and $90 per child, and it runs all year.

Start at the end — the hour you do not choose

Every other number on this page hangs off one you have no say in. Shelling and wild-island departures out of Goodland are built around low water, so the time on your confirmation is the time the Gulf allows, and it is a different time on a different day. Reserve the boat before you plan a single other thing about the day: call (239) 301-8913 or book online, take the slot you are offered, and treat that hour as immovable, because it is. Everything below gets subtracted from it. Do it the other way round — decide when you would like to set off and hope a departure lines up — and you end up either sitting in Goodland far too early or watching a boat leave without you.

Minus twenty minutes — parked, not still arriving

Step back one notch and you get the time you need to be parked at San Marco Marina, which is not the same as the time you hope to be turning onto Palm Avenue. Goodland is a small working fishing village and the marina is easy to find, but you still have to park, work out which boat is yours, use the restroom and walk a whole group down a dock. Give that twenty minutes and you board breathing normally. Give it nothing and you are the reason a boat is late, which is not a thing the tide refunds. And put the marina address into your map app rather than the town name: 604 E Palm Ave, Goodland, FL 34140.

Minus the road — 1 hr 40 to 2 hr 15 to Goodland

Subtract the drive next, and subtract the honest version of it. Goodland is 1 hr 40 to 2 hr 15 from Port Charlotte: US-41 south over the Gilchrist Bridge, then I-75 south. If your trip boards in Naples instead, the same run is 1 hr 05 to 1 hr 35, and that gap matters — planning a Goodland morning off a Naples figure is the commonest way somebody misses a boat down here. Season, roughly November into April, pushes the range toward its top, and Exit 101 at Collier Boulevard, your exit for Goodland, is a live interchange reconstruction zone into late 2026, so the last stretch is slower than it looks on a map. Run the route in your own app the morning you travel — ours is a planning range, not a promise.

Minus the house — the part nobody counts

Now take off the hour that never makes it into anyone’s plan. Between the alarm going off and the car actually moving there is coffee, sunscreen, a cooler, somebody who cannot find their hat, and a fuel stop far better made in Charlotte County than hunted for on Collier Boulevard. For most households that is a solid hour; with small children it is more. Add it to the front and you finally have your alarm. Then make it smaller by packing the night before: soft-soled shoes you do not mind soaking, a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, water, a light layer for the ride out, and a bag for shells. If children are coming, tell us their ages when you book so the right life jackets are already aboard.

Now run the sum twice — winter and summer are different days

The same subtraction produces two completely different days depending on the month. Shelling runs all year, but the low water that makes it worth doing falls in the morning through the winter and in the evening through the summer. A winter trip therefore front-loads everything: the alarm goes off in the dark, the drive down to Goodland lands at the top of its 1 hr 40 to 2 hr 15 range because that is also when the road is busiest, and you are home in daylight with an afternoon still in hand. A summer trip inverts the shape — a civilised morning, an easier run south, then the leg home from Goodland in the dark, which is its own kind of tired. Neither is the better trip; they are two shapes of the same day.

And if the number you land on is unreasonable

Do this arithmetic before you book, not after, because sometimes it comes out badly. There are three honest answers when it does. First: take a Naples departure instead. Naples Bay Resort & Marina is 1 hr 05 to 1 hr 35 from Port Charlotte and runs dolphin cruises, sunset runs, the Port Royal mansion cruise and private charters — a comfortable half-day rather than a dawn expedition. Second: book a private charter out of Goodland, where the boat is yours and the clock has some give in it. Third: come down the evening before and sleep near whichever marina your trip leaves from, which turns a grind into a good weekend. What we would rather you did not do is book a Goodland run, work the numbers out afterwards, and spend the ride south doing sums.

How long is the drive from Port Charlotte, and which dock am I driving to?

Ask which dock first, because the two are not the same trip. Shelling runs, beach and island landings and everything into the Ten Thousand Islands board at San Marco Marina in Goodland: 1 hr 40 to 2 hr 15 from Port Charlotte, US-41 south over the Gilchrist Bridge, then I-75 south. Naples Bay Resort & Marina runs the bay-side cruises and sits nearer at 1 hr 05 to 1 hr 35. Goodland is a good half hour beyond Naples, and planning a Goodland departure off a Naples figure is exactly how people watch a boat leave without them. Are there any tolls on the way down?

None, on any road you would sensibly take out of Charlotte County. US-41 and I-75 are both untolled through Southwest Florida, and there is no toll onto Marco Island or Goodland at all — the Jolley Bridge has been free since 1979, and a 2025 proposal to put a bridge toll back was dropped. Nothing on Collier Boulevard or San Marco Road either. So the road costs you fuel and nothing else, and we are not going to guess at that figure on your behalf.

Why can’t we pick our own departure time?

Because the tide picks it. A shelling trip only works around low water, since that is when the bars and tide lines on the wild islands are actually out of the water, so the departure hour comes to us from the Gulf and gets passed straight to you — and it lands somewhere different on a different date. That is excellent news for the trip and genuinely inconvenient for anyone driving down to Goodland, which is precisely why this page is written backwards. Reserve the boat, accept the hour you are handed, and build the alarm and the road out from there. If you want the clock in your own hands, a private charter has the most room to move.

Is this a day trip, or should we stay over?

Most Port Charlotte families do it in a day, and the arithmetic supports them: add the drive to Goodland at 1 hr 40 to 2 hr 15 each way to a cruise of roughly an hour and a half to two hours and you have a full day rather than an impossible one. Two things change the answer: if the departure is an early winter one and there are small children in the car, a night near the dock turns a brutal start into an easy one. And if you have booked a sunset cruise out of Naples, the drive back up happens in the dark at the end of a long day — that is the combination we would tell you to think twice about.

The time we were offered doesn’t work for us. What now?

If the answer is still no, a private charter out of Goodland gives you more flexibility than anything else we run, because the boat is not shared with anybody else’s schedule. And if nothing lines up at all, our Naples dock runs dolphin, sunset, Port Royal and private trips that are not tied to low water the same way — a shorter drive to Naples and a looser clock.

Can you pick us up somewhere closer to Port Charlotte?

No — we are a boat company, not a transport service. We have exactly two docks: San Marco Marina at 604 E Palm Ave in Goodland, and Naples Bay Resort & Marina at 1500 5th Avenue South. There is no Charlotte Harbor boat, no closer option and no shuttle from anywhere in between. You drive to whichever marina your confirmation names and we take it from there. The consolation is that the dock you drove to is also the head start: Goodland sits on the southeast tip of Marco Island, so the run out into the Ten Thousand Islands from there is a short one.
