The wild bottom corner of the Gulf — unbridged shell beaches, mangrove creeks, islands with no road to them — sits at the far end of the same coastline you already live on, and nothing between here and there does what it does. It is also the longest Gulf-coast haul on this list, so this page is going to count the day out loud instead of talking around it.

The Arithmetic

Six and a half hours of car for two hours of boat

Start with the numbers, because everything else here follows from them. From St. Petersburg you cross the Skyway and run I-75 south: roughly 2 hr 40 to 3 hr 15 to our Naples Bay dock, and roughly 3 hr 15 to 3 hr 50 to San Marco Marina in Goodland. That second figure is the one that usually applies, because shelling and the wild-island runs leave from Goodland — a small fishing village out on the southeast tip of Marco Island, thirty to forty minutes beyond Naples. Season, roughly November through April, stretches all of it. Double either range for the round trip and you have the true shape of the day.

Here is the version of this trip we would talk you out of. You leave after a slow breakfast, get rolling around ten, bleed half an hour somewhere south of Fort Myers, and arrive with just enough day left for a late-afternoon or sunset departure. The water is lovely. Then you walk back to the car in full dark and drive three and a half hours north up an unlit interstate, over a very high bridge, pulling in near midnight with a sunburn and a driver running on fumes. That is not a good day out. It is a good ninety minutes wrapped inside a bad one, and we would rather say so than sell it.

Two versions work. The first is a real day trip built backwards from a morning departure: alarm before dawn, on the road while it is still dark, parked at the marina with a cushion, on the water mid-morning, an unhurried lunch, home in daylight. The second is to stop calling it a day trip at all. Drive down the afternoon before, sleep somewhere near whichever dock your trip leaves from, and the driving stops being the main event of your weekend. We are not a hotel and we take nothing either way — which is exactly why you can believe us on this one.

The night before — book the boat, then build the drive around it

Order matters more here than on any short hop. Shelling trips are built around low tide, so the departure time is set by the water rather than by what suits a car leaving Pinellas County. Book first, take the slot you are handed, and reverse-engineer the alarm from it. Deciding to leave at eight and then hunting for a boat is how people end up watching one pull away. Load the car the night before as well — hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, shoes you do not mind getting wet, a bag for shells — because at five in the morning nobody wants to be looking for sunscreen. About 5:30 a.m. — out of the city and over the Skyway

The Sunshine Skyway is the first thing that happens on this drive, and it is a quiet argument for leaving in the dark: at that hour the bridge is nearly yours, the shipping channel black underneath, Tampa Bay opening out on both sides. It is also a very tall span over open water, which means wind and weather restrictions are a real thing and a hard blow can rearrange your morning. Check your own map app before you back out of the driveway — it knows about today’s wreck or closure and we do not. What we can hand you is a range and not a promise: 3 hr 15 to 3 hr 50 to the Goodland dock, and season pushes you toward the top of it.

About 7:00 a.m. — the long, dull middle on I-75

Past the bridge the drive settles into its most reliable stretch: I-75 south through Bradenton, Sarasota and Fort Myers, largely straight and largely the same. This is where the day gets quietly won or lost, because it is the only place you can bleed time and also the only place a twenty-minute stop costs you nothing, provided you left with a cushion. Stop once and do it properly — coffee, restroom, swap drivers if you brought a second one. Two things to expect between roughly November and April: heavier traffic than the map app first quoted, and construction that moves around. It is the same road our Sarasota readers use, except you are doing an extra ninety minutes of it.

About 9:00 a.m. — the last forty minutes, where people get caught out

Read this bit twice, because it is the most common mistake anyone drives down the coast with. Our two docks are not the same place. Naples Bay Resort & Marina sits at 1500 5th Avenue South, just off US-41 downtown, and that is the 2 hr 40 to 3 hr 15 figure. San Marco Marina is at 604 E Palm Avenue in Goodland, out on the southeast tip of Marco Island, another thirty to forty minutes south down CR-951 and over the bridge — and that is the 3 hr 15 to 3 hr 50 figure. Shelling and the wild-island trips leave from Goodland. Type the marina address into your map app, never the town name, and confirm which dock is on your booking before you are anywhere near Collier County.

Mid-morning to early afternoon — the two hours you got up at five for

Then the driving stops mattering, which is rather the point. Goodland is a working waterfront rather than a resort strip, and from that dock you are into the Ten Thousand Islands quickly: low green keys, tidal creeks and shorelines no car has ever reached and no crew has ever raked. Cruises run about an hour and a half to two hours. On a shelling run a captain reads the tide, puts you ashore on a tideline with a bag and tells you what you are holding — Collier County is empty shells only, and the Florida state shell is the horse conch. Afterwards, eat before you drive. An unhurried hour over lunch in Goodland or on Marco buys back more of the return leg than you would guess.

Early afternoon onward — the drive home, which is the part everyone skips

Most trip pages stop at the dock. This one will not, because the return leg is exactly as long as the outbound one and you will be doing it tired, salted and half-asleep from the sun. Pulling out of Goodland in the early afternoon puts you back over the bay in daylight with an evening still left, and that is the entire argument for a morning departure. Leave at six after a sunset cruise and the identical 3 hr 15 to 3 hr 50 becomes a headlight drive, a high bridge at the end of it and a bed sometime after midnight. Sun and salt air make people sleepier than they expect. Swap drivers if you can, stop when you feel like it rather than when you have to, and if that reads badly to you, take the hint and book a room.

How long is the drive from St. Petersburg to your docks?

Two numbers, and they go to two different places. Our Naples Bay dock at 1500 5th Avenue South runs roughly 2 hr 40 to 3 hr 15 — Skyway, then I-75 south. San Marco Marina in Goodland runs roughly 3 hr 15 to 3 hr 50, because Goodland sits thirty to forty minutes beyond Naples on the tip of Marco Island. Shelling and wild-island trips depart Goodland, so that is usually your figure. Both are ranges rather than promises: season stretches them, and one wreck on I-75 rewrites the morning. Check your own map app the day you travel, navigate to the marina address rather than the town, and add a buffer on top. Other cities are on the day trips hub.

Six-plus hours in the car for a two-hour cruise — is that a fair trade?

That depends entirely on what you are driving for, and we would rather you weighed it than got talked into it. If the picture in your head is a pleasant hour on protected water, you have that within twenty minutes of your own front door and we would not ask you to burn a morning on it. What does not exist anywhere near you is the Ten Thousand Islands: a roadless archipelago of mangrove keys and unbridged shell beaches at the corner where the Gulf runs into the Everglades. Shellers, birders and parents who want a kid standing somewhere with no footprints on it make this drive regularly. If that is not what you want, a closer boat serves you better and we will say so on the phone.

Should we make it an overnight?

For a sunset cruise, yes — that is a flat recommendation from this far up the coast, and it is the one piece of advice here that costs us something. A sunset departure means beginning the 3 hr 15 to 3 hr 50 return from Goodland in full dark at the end of an already long day, and that is not a drive we would put our own families on. Come down in the afternoon, sleep near the dock, take the cruise unhurried and drive back rested. We do not own, book or earn anything from any hotel; the stays page simply lists the areas around each dock so you can choose your own. For a morning trip, an overnight is optional rather than necessary.

If we only get one day, which trip should we book?

A morning shelling tour or a beach and island run out of Goodland. Both put you on sand with no bridge to it, both fit an early start, and both leave the afternoon free for lunch and a daylight drive home. Shelling is $125 per adult and $90 per child and runs all year, with the low tides that matter falling in the morning through winter and in the evening through summer — which is why the calendar, not your preference, sets the start time. Nobody can promise you dolphins, shells or a spoonbill; these are wild animals and unraked beaches, and an operator guaranteeing otherwise is guessing.

What time do we need to be there, and will you wait for us?

Plan on being in the marina lot twenty to thirty minutes ahead of your departure, which on a drive this long means treating the posted time as a hard deadline rather than a target. Boats leave on schedule because the tide does not negotiate and other guests are aboard, so we cannot hold one for a car still on I-75. The better fix is upstream: leave earlier than feels necessary. Thirty spare minutes at the dock costs you a coffee, and thirty missing ones cost you the day.

Is Goodland the same as Marco Island, and which address goes in the GPS?

Goodland is a small village on the southeast tip of Marco Island, and it is not what most people picture when they hear Marco — no resort strip, just a working fishing waterfront. For a trip leaving from there, put 604 E Palm Ave, Goodland, FL 34140 into the map app. For a Naples Bay trip it is 1500 5th Ave S, Naples, FL 34102. Do not navigate to “Marco Island” or “Naples” as a town, because either one can drop you twenty minutes or more short of the dock, and coming this far you have no spare twenty minutes to hand over. Your confirmation names the marina — check it against the address before you pull out.
