The Arithmetic

Six to seven hours of driving, counted out loud

West Palm Beach sits on the Atlantic side of the state, and the road out of it goes the wrong way first. No single highway carries you straight across the peninsula from here: you run I-95 south, cut west on SR-80 below Lake Okeechobee, drop south on US-27 through the sugar country, and only then merge onto Alligator Alley for the last long straight to the Gulf coast. Four roads and three handoffs — of the east-coast cities we serve, this is the least direct one. Figure 2 hours 30 to 3 hours 05 to our Naples Bay dock, and 3 hours 05 to 3 hours 40 to San Marco Marina in Goodland, which sits well past Marco Island.

Now double the number that applies to you, because that is what decides the shape of your day. Round trip to Goodland is 6 hours 10 to 7 hours 20 of actual driving. Add a cruise of an hour and a half to two hours, add the twenty minutes we ask you to be early, and you are at eight and a half to nine and a half hours before anybody eats. Put lunch and a fuel stop on top of that and a shelling day trip runs ten or eleven hours, driveway to driveway. Season stretches all of it — roughly November through April this coast simply drives slower — and the Alley is tolled, at a rate we will not quote because it changes.

That arithmetic points at exactly two honest answers, and we would rather you got them here than worked them out in a dark parking lot. If you want shells and a wild island, take a morning shelling departure out of Goodland and treat it as a long but genuinely workable day, with both legs driven in daylight. If what you actually want is the evening cruise, sleep here. We are not a hotel, we have no arrangement with any of them, and we will say it anyway: there is a page of neighborhoods and stays near both marinas, and picking one off it turns a grind into a weekend.

Start here: shells, or the light?

Everything on this page hangs off one question, so answer it before you touch a calendar. If the point is shells — an unraked beach, a tideline you get to walk without stepping around anybody — your boat leaves San Marco Marina in Goodland, out on the southeast tip of Marco Island, and your drive is 3 hours 05 to 3 hours 40. If the point is the light — a slow cruise while the Gulf goes copper and nobody has anywhere to be — your boat leaves Naples Bay Resort & Marina downtown, and the same road delivers you in 2 hours 30 to 3 hours 05. Those two docks are roughly twenty miles and thirty-five minutes apart, and wanting will not move one closer to the other. Choose the water first. Every other decision here is downstream of that one.

If it’s shells: the long day that genuinely works

This is the day-trip version we will defend, and it holds up for one reason: both drives happen in daylight. Shelling departures out of Goodland are set by low tide rather than by what suits a driver coming from Palm Beach County, so you book the boat and get handed a time. Then count backwards from it — three-plus hours of road, twenty minutes of parking and finding the slip, and however long your household honestly takes to get out the door. On plenty of these mornings that means pulling out while it is still dark. You cruise ninety minutes to two hours, you eat on Marco or in Naples, and you start back with the sun still high. It is a big day — and it is also nine or ten committed hours in which nobody drives tired on an unlit highway, which is the test that matters.

If it’s the sunset cruise: stay the night, and we mean it

We would rather lose the booking than watch somebody attempt this one as a day trip. A sunset cruise off Naples Bay ends after dark by definition. Waiting behind it is 2 hours 30 to 3 hours 05 back east: the full length of Alligator Alley, fenced and unlit with long gaps between exits, then north through open farm country. You would be doing all of that at the tail of a day that opened with a three-hour drive the other way. That is too much to hand one driver. Come down in the afternoon instead, take the boat while the light does its thing, sleep near the coast and head home rested. If it’s both: the two-day version, which is the good one

If you cannot pick, stop pretending it is a day trip and do it properly. Drive over on a Friday afternoon, when the road is only a road and nothing is riding on your arrival time. Take the evening cruise out of Naples Bay with nowhere to be afterwards. Sleep. Then run the tide the next morning from Goodland, collect the wild-island half of this coast on day two, and head back east in the afternoon. Your total mileage does not change — you still cross the state and cross it back — but neither leg lands on top of a boat ride, and you stop having to choose between the two things you came for. If the tide slot won’t fit: the Naples-dock day

Sometimes the departure on offer is simply too early to drive to, or the only date you have puts the tide in the wrong half of the day. That does not kill the trip; it moves the dock. Everything running out of Naples Bay Resort & Marina — dolphin cruises, private charters, the Port Royal mansion run, the $20 water shuttle — sits 2 hours 30 to 3 hours 05 from you instead of 3 hours 05 to 3 hours 40, and none of it is locked to a low tide. What you give up is the boat-only shell beaches, which is a real loss and we will not pretend otherwise. Whichever branch you took: boat first, car second

The order matters far more from three hours out than it does for somebody three miles away. Departure times here are dictated by tide and daylight, and the workable weekend slots in season are gone before most out-of-county callers get around to them. So lock the boat, accept the time you are given, and assemble the drive around it rather than the reverse. Then, on the morning itself, let a live map app pick the road before you back out of the garage — closures and crashes are a today problem, not something a page can tell you about in advance. Add a cushion on top of whatever it says. How long is the drive from West Palm Beach, and which number should we use?

Use the one that matches your dock. Naples Bay Resort & Marina runs roughly 2 hours 30 to 3 hours 05 from West Palm Beach. San Marco Marina in Goodland, where shelling and island trips depart, runs roughly 3 hours 05 to 3 hours 40, because Goodland sits past Marco Island — a good half hour beyond Naples. The road is I-95 south, SR-80 west, US-27 south, then Alligator Alley. Roughly November through April everything down here moves slower, so treat those as ranges and let a live map app settle it on the day.

Can we really do this and be home the same night?

For a morning shelling trip, yes, and it is a haul. Round-trip driving to Goodland comes to 6 hours 10 to 7 hours 20. The cruise adds ninety minutes to two hours, and with food and fuel you are committing ten or eleven hours between leaving your driveway and pulling back into it. The saving grace is that both legs run in daylight. Try the same thing around a sunset departure and the return happens in the dark at the end of an already long day, which is exactly where we stop recommending it.

Why are you pushing an overnight so hard?

Because the honest version of an evening trip from your side of the state is a late three-hour drive at the close of a day that already contained one. Alligator Alley is fenced, unlit and thin on services, and the stretch north of it is open farm country. We do not own a hotel, we take nothing from anyone who does, and we would rather say this than sell you the wrong departure. Which marina does our trip leave from?

Check before you set an alarm, because the two are about thirty-five minutes apart. Shelling, beach-and-island and Ten Thousand Islands trips leave San Marco Marina, 604 E Palm Ave, Goodland. Dolphin cruises, sunset cruises, Port Royal mansion cruises, private charters and the $20 Naples Bay water shuttle leave Naples Bay Resort & Marina, 1500 5th Avenue South. Your confirmation names the marina — put that street address into your map app rather than the town name, which is how people end up at the wrong dock.

Should we book the boat before we plan the drive?

Book first, every time — getting that sequence wrong costs a local twenty minutes and costs you a whole Saturday. Shelling departures are built around low tide, so the time comes to you rather than the other way round. Booking early also protects you on a weekend between November and April, when the sensible slots fill first. Once your time is confirmed, work backwards through the road and add a real buffer. We leave when we say we will, because low tide is not something anyone gets to reschedule.

What will we actually see out there?

Wild bottlenose dolphins live in this water year-round and turn up often, though never on cue — be wary of anyone who promises otherwise. Birds are close to a constant along the mangrove edges: pelicans, herons, sometimes a roseate spoonbill working a flat. Shelling runs all year, with morning negative lows in winter and evening lows in summer, on beaches nothing drives to. Two rules to bring with you: Collier County is empty shells only, and the Florida state shell is the horse conch.
