LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort sits on Gulf Shore Drive at Vanderbilt Beach, which means you have already solved the hardest part of a Naples evening: you have a west-facing beach and a clean shot at the horizon. So we’re not going to pretend the view from the sand isn’t lovely. What we’ll say is that it’s one frame, fixed, with the shoreline behind you and a row of chairs on either side. On the boat you’re inside the same sunset instead of watching it from the edge — horizon all the way around, color running across open water in every direction, and the whole thing moving because you are. That’s the trade, and for most couples it’s an easy one.

Here’s the honest part, and we’d rather you hear it now than at 4:45 with a boat waiting: LaPlaya sits further north than any other stay on this list, and our dock is all the way down at 1500 5th Avenue South on Naples Bay. Figure about a 25–30 minute drive, longer in season or if you meet US-41 at the wrong hour. That’s a real drive, not a hop, so build the evening around it instead of squeezing it in. Check your own map app from your door that afternoon, leave a cushion, and consider a rideshare so nobody has to run the coast road home in the dark. The upside: you land in Old Naples, with the restaurants of 5th Avenue South a few blocks from where you tie up.

Once you’re aboard, the run is simple and the captain does the work. We idle down Naples Bay past the Port Royal docks, slip through Gordon Pass, and come out on the open Gulf with Keewaydin Island — the wild, boat-only barrier island south of the pass — sitting long and low off the port side while the color builds. Bottlenose dolphins live in the bay and the passes year-round and often turn up alongside on the way out, sometimes riding the wake close enough to hear them breathe. Getting There

From LaPlaya to the dock, honestly

It’s the longest run in this grid, so here’s the whole thing laid out before you get in the car.

Start: Vanderbilt Beach, North Naples

LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort sits at 9891 Gulf Shore Drive, out on the Vanderbilt Beach strip at the north end of the city, with the Gulf directly out front. It’s a lovely address and a genuinely good place to watch the sun go down from dry land — which is exactly why we don’t oversell the boat as a replacement for it. Our boats don’t leave from the beach in front of you, though, and they can’t: we run out of a protected marina downtown so we can reach Naples Bay, Gordon Pass and the Port Royal canals on calm water instead of punching out through the surf. So an evening on the water starts the same way for everybody up here — with a drive south down the coast.

The drive south — give it real time

Plan on about a 25–30 minute drive from Gulf Shore Drive down to 1500 5th Avenue South. That’s the longest run of any stay we serve on the Naples side, and it’s an estimate rather than a promise — February at five o’clock does not drive like September at ten in the morning. Most people come down Gulf Shore Boulevard or cut over to the Tamiami Trail and follow it into Old Naples; both are easy, both slow down in season. Do the sensible thing and drop the marina address into your own map app before you leave the room, then add ten minutes on top. Nobody has ever regretted arriving early at a marina with a coffee in hand.

The dock: Naples Bay Resort & Marina

We meet you at Naples Bay Resort & Marina, 1500 5th Avenue South, on the protected water of Naples Bay a few blocks east of the 5th Avenue South restaurants. It’s a calm, tidy marina rather than a busy public ramp — flat water, easy boarding, and no scramble to find your captain. Once you’ve booked we’ll send the exact slip and a where-to-meet note so you’re not walking the docks with a phone in your hand. Restrooms are right there before you board. And if you’ve made the drive down anyway, it’s worth turning the evening into a whole outing: tie up after the cruise, walk over to dinner, and head back up the coast in no particular hurry.

Parking, or skipping it altogether

There’s parking at and around the marina, plus the public options in the 5th Avenue South district a short walk away. Season fills those up, especially on a nice evening, so give yourself the buffer we keep nagging about. Honestly, though, our recommendation for a couple coming down from LaPlaya is to skip the car: book a rideshare one way, have a drink with dinner afterward, and let somebody else handle the coast road home. Arrive about ten to fifteen minutes before your booked time either way, so boarding is unhurried and you’re settled in your seat when the lines come off. What to bring for a sunset run

Keep it light. Soft-soled shoes, sunglasses, a hat for the ride out, and reef-safe sunscreen if you’re boarding while the sun is still up. The thing people underestimate is temperature: the Gulf breeze at cruising speed feels nothing like the beach at Vanderbilt, and once the sun is down the bay turns cool and glassy on the way home. Bring a light layer each — you’ll want it. A real camera or a wiped-clean phone lens earns its keep at golden hour, when the light does most of the work for you. We handle water and shaded seating; anything you’d like to sip or nibble is yours to bring, and we’ll talk you through what fits when you book.

Then: the part you drove for

Lines off, and the drive stops mattering. Your captain runs you down Naples Bay past the Port Royal docks, out through Gordon Pass, and into the open Gulf with Keewaydin Island stretched along the southern horizon. That’s where the evening earns the mileage: no shoreline behind you, no rows of chairs, just water and sky and the two of you somewhere in the middle of it. Dolphins often show on the way out or back, ospreys and pelicans work the markers, and the captain narrates as much or as little as you like. An hour and a half to two hours later you’re back at the same slip, with dinner a few blocks away and the coast road north waiting whenever you’re ready.

We’ll be straight with you: that’s the longest run of any property we serve on the Naples side, and it’s a range rather than a guarantee, because season and time of day swing it hard. We already watch the sunset from the beach. Why get on a boat?

What time should we book, given the drive?

Sunset moves through the year, so the smart move is to book the cruise first and work backwards from it. Once you have your departure time, subtract the 25–30 minute drive, subtract another fifteen for parking and boarding, then add a season cushion on top — that’s when you leave LaPlaya. In practice most couples head down a good hour early, park once, and spend the spare minutes on 5th Avenue South rather than white-knuckling US-41. Booking dinner for after you tie up turns the drive into a proper night out instead of a round trip. Call us and we’ll tell you exactly what time your date departs.

Will we see dolphins on a sunset cruise?

Often, and that’s the most honest word for it. Wild bottlenose dolphins live in Naples Bay and the passes year-round, and on a lot of evenings they turn up alongside the boat or ride the wake near Gordon Pass, especially on a moving tide. We never guarantee a sighting, though — they’re wild animals on their own schedule, and anyone who promises them is selling you something. What we can count on is the birdlife along the markers and seawalls, calm protected water on the bay, and a captain who knows the stretches where dolphins tend to work. In the cool months, roughly November through March, there’s also a chance of a manatee drifting in the backwaters.

Can we have the boat to just the two of us?

Yes — that’s a private charter, and it’s a popular choice for couples who’ve made the drive down and want the evening to be theirs.
